Turbo Exhaust System Design

The turbo back or turbo back is the part of the exhaust system from the outlet of a turbocharger to the final vent to open air.

A performance exhaust system is a characterizing element for any internal combustion conveyance. Not to mention the poorly designed exhaust system will cause unwanted turbo lag meaning an unresponsive and unexciting driving experience. Given the installed locations of the turbochargers custom formed exhaust pipes are required to route exhaust from the turbos to the remainder of the exhaust system. Defining the acoustic profile and influencing the powerband exhaust design is a more dynamic science than stringing together a few pipes and tacking on some mufflers.

With design we mean the entire system from the engine exit point the turbo outlet in most cases all the way to where the exhaust leaves the boat. Turbo back systems are generally produced as aftermarket performance systems for cars with turbochargers. A poorly designed exhaust system will affect both boost control and peak power in any case so a larger turbocharger is required in order to compensate for this. Some turbo back and header back systems replace stock catalytic converters with others having less flow.
