Disconnect the garage door opener so the door remains closed.
Tighten garage door spring.
If the garage door easily swings open and closed then it will need to be tightened.
Put on eye.
The springs extend along the shaft and work by twisting as the garage door closes by means of cables attached to each side of the lowest garage door panel.
Release your hold on the door and see if it stays up all the way.
Once the screws are loosened place the second metal rod into an opposite notch on the cone and turn both rods to the right or to the left depending on whether you are tightening or loosening the tension.
Adjust the springs on both sides of the door the same way.
This can make the other parts of the garage door last a much longer time.
Next get hold of one of the tension rods and push it into the first notch.
To adjust your garage door s side mounted springs first open your door fully and secure it in place with a c clamp below the bottom roller.
Once your garage door is secured remove the spring hook from the track hanger which will allow you to move the hook and adjust the spring s tension.
Through the use of pulleys they perform the same function as the torsion springs.
Position a sturdy ladder to the side of the springs rather than working directly in front of them for safety reasons.
Locate a reddish color cone around the spring.
Turn the rods to the right.
Side mounted springs are long heavy springs mounted on each side of the upper garage door track.
Take note of the notches and screws that hold the torsion spring in place.
If the door was closing too quickly move the spring to the next higher hole on the bracket.
Slowly close your door about halfway and release it.
Hold the garage door and remove the vise grips from the track after the spring tension has been adjusted.
Use locking pliers or a c clamp to secure the door to the track to keep it from opening when you release the tension on the springs 1 x research sourcestep 2 loosen the set screws while holding each spring with a winding bar.
This tension makes it easier to lift the garage door from its closed position.
It should be placed on the left hand side of the torsion spring and placed away from the garage door s center.
Once the spring is free of tension remove from its track hanger.
Retest the door balance as you did in step 1.
Step 1 unplug the garage door opener and clamp the door to the track.
If it was opening too quickly move it to the next lower hole.
